Monday, Jun 16, 2014 at 9:27am

In partnership with Winnipeg's Classic 107, we're proud to present our Classical CD of the Week...

Anne-Sophie Mutter and Lambert Orkis' The Silver Album

Anne-Sophie Mutter and Lambert Orkis have been playing concerts together since 1988. The two perfectly harmonized musicians have not only performed in the most prestigious concert halls in the world, they have also produced numerous CDs for the Deutsche Grammophon label. The recording with Beethoven's sonatas for piano and violin, for example, received a Grammy Award, and the recording of Mozart's sonatas for piano and violin was awarded a prize by the French magazine "Le Monde de la Musique".

The new double CD by Mutter and Orkis, "The Silver Album" with the world premiere recordings of Penderecki's "La Follia" and Previn's violin sonata No. 2; the recordings of Massenet's "Méditation from Thaïs" and Ravel's "Pièce en forme de Habanera" are also new. These 40 minutes of new music are joined by sonatas by Beethoven, Brahms, Fauré and Mozart, as well as a selection of legendary encores by the duo, including for example "Beau Soir" by Debussy or Kreisler's "Caprice viennois op. 2".

Classical Recording of the Week: Piano by Myung Whun Chung

Monday, Jun 02, 2014 at 10:07am

In partnership with Winnipeg's Classic 107, we're proud to present our Classical CD of the Week...

Myung Whun Chung's Piano

The ECM New Series debut of Myung Whun Chung features the widely-celebrated conductor as pianist. Recorded at Venice's Teatro La Fenice in July 2013, the album marks the first occasion that Chung has recorded solo. In a performer's note, he describes the album as a gift for younger listeners, as well as a personal thanks to those who share his love of this music. Chung's touch and sensitivity for dynamics cast a new light on familiar pieces -- by Debussy, Chopin, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Schubert, Schumann and Mozart -- as they are experienced in a gently flowing sequence which also serves to highlight affinities between the compositions. Although conducting now fully occupies his professional life, Chung (born 1953 in Seoul) made his debut as pianist with the Seoul Philharmonic at the age of seven. He later studied the piano with Maria Curcio, the last and favourite pupil of Artur Schnabel. In 1974 he was a prize winner in the Tchaikovsky Competition. He then began his career playing piano trios with his sisters, Kyung Wha Chung and Myung Wha Chung.
