I had the pleasure of joining Robert J. Sawyer for dinner prior to his reading of Rollback, his seventeenth novel, at our Grant Park location. The CBC is reporting that Margaret Atwood has spoken forcefully against the Harper Government's cuts to arts funding. Speaking with CBC radio prior to the Blue Metropolis International Literary Festival in Montreal, she said:
"They basically just hate us... you know it’s people who have never seen any arts in their own lives — they would rather not have gardens, they would rather have parking lots. They just think it’s a frill probably."
Martel, Atwood, who's next?Link to CBC article.
Previously: Yan Martel to Stephen Harper.
Yann Martel is sending Stephen Harper a book every two weeks:
a book that has been known to expand stillness. That book will be inscribed and will be accompanied by a letter I will have written. I will faithfully report on every new book, every inscription, every letter, and any response I might get from the Prime Minister, on this website."
