This holiday season, our McNally Robinson Game Masters recommend either the campaign-based survival game, Pandemic Legacy, or the casual party game for all ages, Pickles to Penguins.
In Pandemic Legacy, the world is on the brink of disaster. Your disease fighting team must keep four deadly diseases at bay for a whole year. Each month will bring new surprises, and your actions in each game will have repercussions on the next. Will you let cities fall to the diseases? Will your team be enough to keep the viruses at bay for a whole year?
Pandemic Legacy is available in two editions: Red and Blue. Both sets play the exact same way, but the different colour schemes help prevent confusion when you and your friends have multiple campaigns on the go. For the casual gamer, the different coloured sets simply mean you get to select your preference of Red or Blue.
For 2 to 4 players. Recommended for ages 13 and up.
Pickles to Penguins is a hilarious party game where you need a fast hand, mind, and mouth if you're going to win. Take a deep breath and let the action and chaos begin. Two cards are turned over and placed alongside the center deck. These are the cards which all players will play to. Players frantically place cards from their own deck on top of either card, but they must say out loud an aspect of commonality between their card and the card in the center. For example: A train picture on a airplane picture "Modes of transport." The first player to get rid of all their cards wins the game.
Ages 6 and above.
Power Grid is the ultimate resource and money management game. As they player you take on the role of power plant manager. You must bid on power plants, buy raw materials to power said plants, and build a network of connected cities.
Players mark pre-existing routes between cities for connection, and then bid against each other to purchase the power plants that they use to power their cities.
However, as plants are purchased, newer, more efficient plants become available, so by merely purchasing, you're potentially allowing others access to superior equipment.
Additionally, players must acquire the raw materials (coal, oil, garbage, and uranium) needed to power said plants (except for the 'renewable' windfarm/ solar plants, which require no fuel), making it a constant struggle to upgrade your plants for maximum efficiency while still retaining enough wealth to quickly expand your network to get the cheapest routes.
After playing this game more than 10 times, it has yet to become predictable or repetitive. It plays with up to 6 players, which as a social gamer, is a feature I am always looking for in any game. Power Grid provides a fun, and challenging gaming experience that I would highly recommend for serious and casual gamers alike.Categories: Staff Pick, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Games

New in our games section is CODENAMES a new card game where you play the role of spymaster.
In Codenames, two teams compete to see who can make contact with all of their agents first. Spymasters give one-word clues that can point to multiple words on the board. Their teammates try to guess words of the right color while avoiding those that belong to the opposing team. And everyone wants to avoid the assassin.
The game can be played with 2-8 players, which makes it great for family get togethers, or one on one. It is recommended for ages 14 and up.

New to our collection is the new two-player miniatures game, Star Wars: Armada.
Take command of the unmatched power of the Imperial fleet, or gain the opportunity to prove your tactical acumen as an admiral in the Rebel Alliance. Massive Star Destroyers fly to battle against Rebel corvettes and frigates. Banks of turbolasers unleash torrential volleys of fire against squadrons of X-wings and TIEs.
Assemble your fleet, survey your objectives, form your battle plan, plot your course, call your shots, and destroy the enemy. Armada balances the awesome scale of the Star Wars galaxy’s ships and space warfare with ship designs and rules that make for accessible, intuitive play experiences. It’s your job to issue the tactical commands that will decide the course of battle and, perhaps, the fate of the galaxy.
The Star Wars: Armada Core Set, which contains everything you need to get started, is required to play. There are also a number of expansion packs -- including extra fighter squadrons and capital ships such as the Rebel's Assault Frigate Mark II and the Imperial Gladiator-class Star Destroyer -- to increase the size and firepower of your personal armada. Look below for a full list of the current expansion packs available at McNally Robinson. A second wave of expansions is also in the works, which we'll be sure to get once released.Categories: Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Games
