An Afternoon with Eliza Reid

Sunday May 04 2025 2:00 pm, Winnipeg, Grant Park in the Atrium | Streaming on YouTube

Join us for a very special afternoon with Eliza Reid, bestselling author and former First Lady of Iceland, as she discusses her debut mystery novel, Death on the Island (Simon & Schuster Canada) with host Shelagh Rogers. A book signing will follow. Co-presented by the Consulate General of Iceland in Winnipeg, the Icelandic Canadian Frón, and Lögberg-Heimskringla.

This event will be hosted live in the Atrium of McNally Robinson Booksellers, Grant Park and also available as a YouTube stream.

Agatha Christie meets Nordic noir in this “brilliant debut” (Louise Penny, #1 New York Times bestselling author) about diplomats stranded on a windswept Icelandic island with a murderer in their midst.

Eliza Reid is a bestselling writer, public speaker, gender equality advocate, and cofounder of the acclaimed Iceland Writers Retreat. She was born and raised in Canada but has lived in Iceland for over twenty years. Her first book, Secrets of the Sprakkar: Iceland’s Extraordinary Women and How They Are Changing the World, was an instant bestseller in Canada and Iceland, and a New York Times Book Review Editors’ Pick. Death on the Island is the first of a series and has been optioned for television. From 2016 to 2024, Eliza served in the unofficial role of First Lady while her husband was President of Iceland, an adventure which greatly informed the writing of this book. She lives in the outskirts of Reykjavík with her husband and four children.

Host Shelagh Rogers is a veteran broadcast-journalist who made a home at CBC Radio for 43 years. For the last 15 of those, she was host and co-producer of The Next Chapter, an award-winning program devoted to writing in Canada. In June of 2023, Shelagh stepped down from CBC Radio to pursue other adventures of her own devising. She is now working with Indspire and will be collaborating with the legendary radio and TV producer Kim Wheeler on a podcast called Words and Culture.

Shelagh is the second female Chancellor of Queen’s University in its 185 year history. She devoured Eliza Reid’s last book Secrets of the Sprakkar: Iceland’s Extraordinary Women and How They are Changing the World. As she read it, she realized Eliza Reid is one of those women. Shelagh is very excited to speak with Eliza about her first mystery novel and joins everyone here at McNally Robinson in welcoming her back to talk about Death on the Island.

Agatha Christie meets Nordic noir in this "brilliant debut" (Louise Penny, #1 New York Times bestselling author) about diplomats stranded on a windswept Icelandic island with a murderer in their midst.

A remote Icelandic island. A diplomatic dinner party. A murderer in their midst.

When Kavita Banerjee, the deputy ambassador of Canada, dies suddenly at a dinner party attended by the great and the good from Icelandic business and politics, suspicion falls on everyone present, but particularly on the victim's boss, Graeme Shearer, the Canadian ambassador.

Jane Shearer, Graeme's long-suffering wife, is accustomed to cleaning up his messes. But now, saving her husband's career--and her crumbling marriage--requires her to investigate her fellow dinner guests. Uncovering corruption and murder is a dangerous job, but Jane knows better than most what desperate people will do to protect their secrets.
