NOTE: This event has already taken place. Please visit this page to see our upcoming events.

Join DR. DALE LECKIE, PhD for a presentation, discussion and signing of his new book WILDLIFE, LANDSCAPES, AND GEOLOGY: AN ALBERTA AND SASKATCHEWAN TOURING GUIDE (BROKEN POPLARS PUBLISHERS).

This event will be hosted live in the Travel Alcove and also available as a simultaneous YouTube stream.

From the Rocky Mountains to the rain shadow of the prairies, from deeply entrenched rivers and their prairie oases, and glaciated terrain, geology has a strong impact on wildlife. The relationship between wildlife and landscape is explored and exemplified in the lives of golden eagles and the Rockies, the American pika and eroding mountains, of burrowing owls on glaciated plains, and greater short-horned lizards surviving in semi-arid badlands. In this richly written and illustrated guide, Dale Leckie interweaves science with spectacular photos and beautiful art to take you to the most interesting places in the prairie provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Dr. Dale Leckie is a geologist, scientist, speaker, and best-selling author of tour books for the public. He is adjunct professor of Earth, Environment and Energy at University of Calgary. He has edited numerous books and published widely on the geology of western Canada. His previous book "The Scenic Geology of Alberta: A Roadside Touring and Hiking Guide" (2021) topped the bestseller lists as did his first book "Rocks, Ridges, and Rivers: Geological Wonders of Banff, Yoho, and Jasper National Parks" (2017).

Geology can be defined as "the science which deals with the physical structures and substance of the earth, their history and the processes which act on them." From the Rocky Mountains to the rain shadow of the prairies, from deeply entrenched rivers of prairie oases and glaciated terrain, geology has a strong impact on wildlife. The relationship between wildlife and landcape is explored and exemplified in the lives of golden eagles and the Rockies, the American pika and eroding mountains, of burrowing owls on glaciated plains and greater short-horned lizards living in a rain shadow. In this richly written and illustrated guide, Leckie interweaves science with spectacular photos, beautiful art images and maps to take you to the most interesting places in these two prairie provinces.
