An Eerie Virtual Evening with Lindsay Merbaum & Jess Landry

Friday Oct 29 2021 7:00 pm, Winnipeg, Online via Zoom & YouTube

Join us for a special virtual evening with two exciting writers of weird / horror fiction: Lindsay Merbaum, author of The Gold Persimmon (Creature Publishing), and Jess Landry, author of The Mother Wound (Independent Legions Publishing) and co-editor of There is No Death, There are No Dead (Crystal Lake Publishing). They will be joined in conversation by author Joanna Graham, also of McNally Robinson Booksellers.

Registration is required to directly participate in the Zoom webinar. It will be simultaneously streamed on YouTube and available for viewing thereafter.

In Lindsay Merbaums's The Gold Persimmon, Clytemnestra is a check-in girl at a temple-like New York City hotel with gilded furnishings and carefully guarded secrets. Cloistered in her own reality, Cly lives by a strict set of rules until a connection with a troubled hotel guest threatens the world she’s so carefully constructed. In a parallel reality, an inexplicable fog envelops the city, trapping a young, nonbinary writer named Jaime in a sex hotel with six other people. As the survivors begin to turn on one another, Jaime must navigate a deadly game of cat and mouse. Haunted by specters of grief and familial shame, Jaime and Cly find themselves trapped in dual narratives in this gripping experimental novel that explores sexuality, surveillance, and the very nature of storytelling.

Lindsay Merbaum is a queer feminist author and high priestess of home mixology. After graduating from Sarah Lawrence College, she earned her MFA in Fiction from Brooklyn College, where she was a recipient of the Himan Brown Award. Her award-nominated short fiction has appeared in PANK, Anomalous Press, The Collagist, Epiphany, Gargoyle, Day One, Harpur Palate, and Hobart, among others. Her essays and interviews can also be found in Electric Literature, Bustle, Bitch Media, The Rumpus, and more. Lindsay lives in Michigan with her partner and cats. The Gold Persimmon is her first novel. Visit her website for more information on her work.

In her debut collection, Bram Stoker Award-winner Jess Landry blurs the line between genres, magnifying the darkness in the spaces in between, and confronting those relationships that are nearest and dearest to us in the most horrific ways. Mothers. Daughters. Sisters. Friends. No one is safe within the pages of The Mother Wound.

From the day she was born, Bram Stoker Award-winner Jessica Landry has always been attracted to the darker things in life. Since then, Jessica’s fiction has appeared in many anthologies and in her debut collection, The Mother Wound, which includes her Bram Stoker Award-winning short story, “Mutter,” and her Shirley Jackson Award-nominated novelette, “I Will Find You, Even in the Dark.” As well, There Is No Death, There Are No Dead, an anthology co-edited with Aaron J. French, was published in August by Crystal Lake Publishing; and her short story, “Carbon Rites,” will be appearing in Aliens vs Predators: Ultimate Prey, edited by Jonathan Maberry and Bryan Thomas Schmidt, out December 2021 from Titan Books. As a screenwriter, she has various projects in deveopment, including her directorial debut My Only Sunshine (with Eagle Vision). Find her online.

Host Joanna Graham is a Winnipeg writer, reader and bookseller. She holds a master's degree in creative writing from the University of East Anglia, and her short fiction has appeared in The Shadow Over Portage & Main, The New Fantasmagoriana and is forthcoming in OnSpec magazine. Outside of her role as manager of community programs at McNally Robinson Booksellers, she reads and writes as much as she can. She is particularly drawn to unique works of horror, speculative fiction and any piece of literature likely to make your skin crawl.
