An evening with Marina Endicott, launching Close to Hugh (Doubleday Canada) and joined in conversation by Connie Gault, author of A Beauty (McClelland & Stewart). Co-presented by The Word on the Street Saskatoon.

Close to Hugh is a glorious, exuberant, poignant comic novel about youth and age, art and life, love and death--and about losing your mind and finding your heart's desire over the course of seven days one September. Hugh Argylle, owner of the Argylle Art Gallery, has a jarring fall from a ladder – a fall that leaves him with a fractured off-kilter vision of his own life and the lives of his friends, who are going through crises that leave them despairing, afraid, one half-step from going under emotionally or financially. Someone's going to have to fix all that, thinks Hugh – and it will probably be him. Meanwhile, beneath the adult orbit, bright young lives are taking form as the sons and daughters of Hugh's friends and separating from the gravitational pull of their parents. With two sets of friends on the cusp of simultaneous reinvention, Endicott offers us a rare and rich perspective on what it means to rise and fall and rise again, and what in the end we owe those we love.

Marina Endicott’s previous novel, Good to a Fault, won the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best Book, Canada and the Caribbean, and was a finalist for the prestigious Scotiabank Giller Prize. She has been an actor, director, playwright and editor, and now lives in Edmonton, where she teaches at the University of Edmonton and writes.

Connie Gault is the author of two collections of short stories, several plays for stage and radio and the novel Euphoria, winner of the Saskatchewan Book Award for Fiction and short-listed for the High Plains Fiction Award and the Commonwealth Prize for Best Book of Canada and the Caribbean. She lives in Regina. Her new book, A Beauty, is a spellbinding and highly original novel that gives a new name to the Prairie Novel. At one time lyrical and tough, moving and mysterious, it is a captivating tale of a woman who, without intending to, touches many lives, and sometimes alters them forever.
