A Celebration of Wayne Tefs' "Barker"
Saturday Oct 04 2014 3:00 pm, Winnipeg, Grant Park in the Atrium
The launch of Barker featuring readings from David Arnason, Dennis Cooley and other special guests.
Harlan always knew he was special, that he was different from other folk. He figured he’d found his calling when he joined the circus. People would come from far and wide to the sound of his voice, even in the middle of the dried up depression era prairies. But the carnie life wasn’t quite right for Harlan, and so he kept looking, searching for the time when all eyes would be on him, when he would be the main attraction. But when Harlan finally finds his moment in the sun he realizes that, sometimes, the things we run from define who we really are.
Wayne Tefs (1947-2014) was born in Winnipeg and grew up in northwestern Ontario, and passed away on Sept 15 of this year. He edited a number of anthologies and published several novels and works of non-fiction. His novel Moon Lake received the Margaret Laurence Award for Fiction in 2000 and his novel Be Wolf won the 2007 McNally Robinson Book of the Year Award. He lived in Winnipeg with his wife and son.
