In conversation with John K. Samson & signing The Confabulist (Knopf Canada).

Steven Galloway will discuss his latest book with John K. Samson. This evening presented as part of McNally Robinson Booksellers and the Winnipeg International Writers Festival's Spring Literary Series.

From the beloved, award-winning, bestselling author of The Cellist of Sarajevo comes a beautiful, suspense-filled novel that uses the life and sudden death of Harry Houdini to weave a magical tale of intrigue, love and illusion.

The Confabulist also tells the story of the man who killed Houdini (twice): Martin Strauss, an everyday man whose fate was tied to the magician's in unforeseen ways. Memorable characters spin around Houdini's celebrity-driven life, as they did in his time: from the Romanov family, to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and the powerful heads of Scotland Yard, and the Spiritualists who would use whoever they could to establish their religion.

Steven Galloway is the author of Finnie Walsh, Ascension and The Cellist of Sarajevo. He teaches creative writing at the University of British Columbia, and lives with his wife and two young daughters in Vancouver, British Columbia.

John K. Samson is the singer and songwriter for the venerated indie rock outfit The Weakerthans, and his poetry and prose has appeared in Matrix Magazine, Geist, The Believer, and Post Prairie—An Anthology of New Poetry. He lives in Winnipeg, where he’s also the managing editor and co-founder of ARP Books.
