Man Booker Prize 2016: Shortlist

The Man Booker Prize 2016 Shortlist, released on September 13, is comprised of the following six titles:

This prize, created in 1969 with the purpose of bringing about the widest possible readership of literary fiction, rewards the winning author with a sum of £50,000 and a uniquely designed bound copy of their book. The winner will be selected from this shortlist and announced on October 25, 2016.

This year, two of the six shortlisted authors happen to hail from Canadian soil: David Szalay and Madeleine Thien.

Born in Montreal and raised in London, David Szalay has been named one of The Telegraph's "Top 20 British Writers Under 40." He has written three previous novelsSpring, The Innocent, and London and the South-Eastand has been awarded both the Betty Trask Award and the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize for his standout work in fiction. His Man Booker Prize shortlisted title, All That Man Is, tells the stories of nine men from all walks of life who reside in Prague. The novel weaves the tales of these characters together to depict the raw, and often hilarious, truths of human nature.

A Vancouver native who currently lives in Montreal, Madeleine Thien is the author of two award-winning novels, Certainty and Dogs at the Perimeteras well as a book of short stories titled Simple RecipesShe has been awarded the Canadian Authors Assocation Air Canada Award for the most promising Canadian writer under the age of 30. Her shortlisted novel, Do Not Say We Have Nothing, follows the aftermath of the Tiananmen Square protests through the eyes of Ai-Ming, who has recently fled China and found refuge in Canada. After being taken in by ten-year-old Marie and her mother, Ai-Ming recounts to them her family's experiences during and after Mao Zedong's Cultural Revolution. As artistically poignant as it is politically, Thien's novel examines how these events in China have echoed both throughout generations and across the globe.
