We've been having a hoot at McNally Robinson this month
Thursday, May 02, 2013 at 1:55pmFrom the unique perspective of David Sedaris comes a new book of essays, Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls, that takes readers on a bizarre and stimulating world tour. From the perils of French dentistry to the eating habits of the Australian kookaburra, from the squat-style toilets of Beijing to the particular wilderness of a North Carolina Costco, we learn about the absurdity and delight of a curious traveler's experiences. Whether railing against the habits of litterers in the English countryside or marvelling over a disembodied human arm in a taxidermist's shop, Sedaris takes us on side-splitting adventures that are not to be forgotten.
It's particularly fitting that this book was released so close to James Duncan's book launch for The Complete Book of North American Owls at our Winnipeg store. Duncan was accompanied on his visit by a live owl, Nemo, and his book has been a bestseller for the past several weeks.
A real owl, an owl specialist, and two owl books - this past month's been a real hoot!

A guy walks into a bar car and...
From here the story could take many turns. When this guy is David Sedaris, the possibilities are endless, but the result is always the same: he will both delight you with twists of humor and intelligence and leave you deeply moved.
Sedaris remembers his father's dinnertime attire (shirtsleeves and underpants), his first colonoscopy (remarkably pleasant), and the time he considered buying the skeleton of a murdered Pygmy.
With Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls, David Sedaris shows once again why his work has been called "hilarious, elegant, and surprisingly moving" (Washington Post).
