Our booksellers are also book readers, so you can imagine we've each got a title or two (or ten or fifty) that we love.

And now we're sharing them with you! On this page you can find an ever-growing selection of Staff Picks supplied to us from both our Winnipeg and Saskatoon booksellers. These books are highly recommended by the booksellers that chose them, and each is available in-store or to order.

Anne Carson: brilliant, captivating, and charmingly humble

Thursday, Mar 21, 2013 at 2:39pm

Red Doc>

"It's important to get somehow into the mind and make it move somewhere it has never moved before."

"Some years ago I wrote a book about a boy named Geryon who was red and had wings and fell in love with Herakles. Recently I began to wonder what happened to them in later life. Red Doc> continues their adventures in a very different style and with changed names. To live past the end of your myth is a perilous thing."

- Anne Carson

A literary event: a follow-up to the internationally acclaimed poetry bestseller Autobiography of Red ("Amazing" - Alice Munro) that takes its mythic boy-hero into the twenty-first century to tell a story all its own of love, loss, and the power of memory.

Award Winning Science Fiction Author "Turns" To Writing Fantasy

Thursday, Mar 07, 2013 at 1:45pm

I've been waiting for A Turn of Light to release since Julie E. Czerneda mentioned it in her McNally Robinson interview in 2008. After over a dozen science fiction novels, Czerneda is trying her hand at fantasy. I had the pleasure of hearing the author read from her fantasy debut at the World Fantasy Convention held in Toronto last year, and it only whet my appetite for more.

Enjoy a taste of A Turn of Light:

By night, Marrowdell posted sentries. Massive toads lined the road. Their eyes were perfect disks of moonlight, like so many silver coins tossed in his path. They weren't toads. Or rather they were something else as well. Like the road, silvered by moonlight also had an amber hue, and the sky, which was mostly dark and star-filled but was also shot through with vivid colours for which he needed names. When he looked closely, the toads' loose folds of skin became coats of fine mail and their warts, rich gems. No idle gauds, he judged those, but medals of some kind. Accomplished toads.

He hoped for their favourable opinion.

You can read the first chapter on Julie's website.

Felicite Warner, Our Favourite Bookseller

Thursday, Sep 06, 2012 at 2:05pm

Felicite Warner passed away Wednesday, September 12, 2012. Our deepest condolences go out to her family . She will be very much missed by them and by those of us who were fortunate enough to know and work with her.

There are countless children (and adults) in Winnipeg who owe their love of reading to "bookseller extraordinaire" Felicité Warner. For years Fel recommended the best of books to countless young people, as well as the parents and grandparents shopping on their behalf.
