Happy Birthday, Mr. Mies!

Wednesday, Mar 27, 2013 at 12:20pm

Today marks the 127th anniversary of the birth of German-American architect Mies van der Rohe (Mies), the last director of the Bauhaus.

To celebrate, why not pick up a copy of the recent publication Thanks for the View, Mr. Mies: Lafayette Park Detroit? The charm of this book is in the fact that it doesn't focus specifically on Ludwig Hiberseimer's planning, Mies' architecture, nor Alfred Caldwell's landscape design of Lafayette Park in Detroit. Instead authors Danielle Aubert, Lana Cavar, and Natasha Chandani take a humanistic approach offering a collection of essays and interviews of the people who live there.

'Mies viewed architecture as embodying multiple levels of value, extending from the entirely functional to the realm of pure art. He also believed, through his interpretation of history, that the aim of architecture is to truly represent its epoch, and that the architect must search out and articulate the significance of the time.'
