May the Fourth Be With You!
Saturday, May 04, 2013 at 10:20am
Today is May 4th, which also means it's STAR WARS Day!
Around the world, fans of the six films (and the entire culture that's been built around them) are rejoicing and celebrating in a variety of ways. Restaurants are preparing Star Wars-themed meals, friends and family are setting down to watch the films marathon-style, and places like Disney World are setting up massive events and festivities to run all day.
At McNally Robinson, we're celebrating the Star Wars saga in the same way that we always do - with plenty of Star Wars-themed merch! Because with us, everyday is Star Wars Day.
Of course we've got Star Wars books - in fact, we've got an entire shelf dedicated to them.
But books are only the tip of the sarlaac's maw. Look after the jump to see more of the Star Wars fun we have in store...

From the unique perspective of David Sedaris comes a new book of essays, Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls, that takes readers on a bizarre and stimulating world tour. From the perils of French dentistry to the eating habits of the Australian kookaburra, from the squat-style toilets of Beijing to the particular wilderness of a North Carolina Costco, we learn about the absurdity and delight of a curious traveler's experiences. Whether railing against the habits of litterers in the English countryside or marvelling over a disembodied human arm in a taxidermist's shop, Sedaris takes us on side-splitting adventures that are not to be forgotten.
It's particularly fitting that this book was released so close to James Duncan's book launch for The Complete Book of North American Owls at our Winnipeg store. Duncan was accompanied on his visit by a live owl, Nemo, and his book has been a bestseller for the past several weeks.
A real owl, an owl specialist, and two owl books - this past month's been a real hoot!

The polls for the CBC Bookie Awards 2013 closed earlier this week, and now the votes have been counted and the winners announced!
A couple of weeks ago we made a post highlighting some local Saskatchewan authors who were among the nominees of this year's Bookie Awards. We're now happy to announce that many of those authors were victors in their categories! Xander Richard's Coast: An Act of Burial was voted the winner of "The Page-Turner Award for the Canadian Book You Couldn't Put Down". Cherry Blossoms by Wes Funk won "The Hot and Bothered Award for Steamiest Read". And the film rendition of Yann Martel's The Life of Pi won "The Silver Screen Award for the Best Book-to-Screen Adaptation". Congratulations to all three authors, as well as to the other 11 winners in the contest!
