'The Science of Paper versus Screens'

Tuesday, Nov 05, 2013 at 3:12pm

Recently Scientific American published an article entitled "The Reading Brain in the Digital Age: The Science of Paper versus Screens", written by Ferris Jabr.

As the article states right in its subheading: "E-readers and tablets are becoming more popular as such technologies improve, but research suggests that reading on paper still boasts unique advantages."

The article is a fascinating read, and coincides with the beliefs of many of our readers and our booksellers -- that paper books just cannot be replaced.

You can read the article by clicking the link above, or by clicking here.

Some Great Canadians and their books

Wednesday, Oct 23, 2013 at 4:30pm

Don Newman
Don Newman, who cut his teeth as a print and broadcast journalist in Winnipeg and Regina in the 1960s, went on to become the senior parliamentary editor for CBC Television in a career that spanned almost 50 years before he retired in 2009. Candid, honest and often funny, one of Canada's most respected political commentators shares decades of insights and experiences in his first book, Welcome to the Broadcast.

An Evening with Don Newman: Mr. Newman will be in our Grant Park store on Monday, October 28th, at 7:00 pm to launch Welcome to the Broadcast. As with all of our in-store events, we welcome everyone to join us. All the details of the event can be found here.

Chris Hadfield
As Commander of the International Space Station, Chris Hadfield captivated the world with stunning photos and commentary from space. Now, in his first book, An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth, he offers readers not just the inspiring story of one man's journey to the ISS, but the opportunity to step into his space-boots and think like an astronaut -- and readers can renew their commitment to pursuing their own dreams, big or small.

Launch and signing with Chris Hadfield: On Wednesday, November 13th, at 7:00 pm Mr. Hadfield will be in our Grant Park store to discuss and sign copies of An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth. As with all of our in-store events, we welcome everyone to join us. All the details of the event can be found here.

Joe Clark
Joe Clark's How We Lead: Canada in a Century of Change is a passionate argument for Canada's reassertion of its place on the world stage, from a former prime minister and one of Canada's longest-serving political figures. In a compelling examination of what Canada can yet be to the world, Clark takes the reader beyond formal foreign policy and looks at the contributions and leadership offered by Canada's most successful individuals and organizations.

An Evening with Joe Clark: Mr. Clark will be in our Grant Park store on Wednesday, November 20th, at 7:00 pm for conversation and signing of his book. As with all of our in-store events, we welcome everyone to join us. All the details of the event can be found here.

Some horror to haunt your Halloween

Saturday, Oct 19, 2013 at 5:32pm

All Hallow's Eve approaches. A night of frolicking, costume-wearing, and merriment... and a night of unspeakable terror.

If you're planning on spending your Halloween with a haunting tale or two, we've got some recommendations of both new and old noteworthy fiction from our Horror section. Surely you'll find your self delightfully frightened with at least one of these books:

Doctor Sleep by Stephen King
    > Weird fiction
The sequel to King's infamous The Shining, Doctor Sleep returns to the now middle-aged character of Dan Torrance. Dan, who has finally managed to escape the demons brought to him during his childhood stay at the Outlook Hotel, has settled into a comfortable life in a New Hampshire town. This peaceful life ends, however, when Dan meets Abra Stone, a young girl who possesses the brightest shining ever known. Having to protect Abra from a roving band of quasi-immortals known as the True Knot, Dan will need to fight for their survival while also facing the return of his own personal demons.

The Penguin Horror Series
Hand-selected by filmmaker, writer, and horror literature fan Guillermo de Toro, these classic tales of terror have been re-printed as gift editions with new and vibrant cover designs and black-edged leaf. Included in each is an introduction from de Toro. Available titles are The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, Haunted Castles by Ray Russell, American Supernatural Tales edited by S. T. Joshi, The Thing on the Doorstep by H. P. Lovecraft, and The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson.

The Twelve by Justin Cronin
    > Vampires / Post-apocalyptic
Taking place both in modern America and a post-apocalyptic Mid-West 100 years in the future, The Twelve follows a band of hardened survivors as they continue their struggle against the monstrous virals: humans corrupted into carnivorous, destructive terrors. While on the hunt for the remainder of the Twelve, the powerful leaders of the virals, the survivors fight against an unknown foe who is capturing and enslaving their friends and family.
