Building Bridges of Understanding with Canadian Muslims

Tuesday, Oct 08, 2019 at 11:45am

The word Islam is an Arabic term that means peace and submission, and the word Muslim means one who attains peace through submission to God, yet there are persistent stereotypes in Western media that associate the Islamic faith with oppression, violence, conflict and struggle.

If you would like to learn more about Islam, and separate the guiding concepts of the faith from the myths and misconceptions, join Shahina Siddiqui—freelance writer, author, spiritual counselor, speaker and educator—in discussing some of the top asked questions about Islam and Canadian Muslims. Over the course of three Saturdays starting on October 12, she will cover an introduction to Islam, women in Islam, core values and Canadian Muslims. The class will also include a discussion on Islamophobia.

**Fandom: (consisting of fan [fanatic] plus the suffix -dom, as in kingdom) is a term that refers to a microcosm of people who are fans of a fiction genre. Apparently Fandom can be traced back to the 1930's! Who knew? It can also be characterized by a feeling of empathy and camaraderie with others who share a common interest. If you are an avid fan and follower of books, movies, television shows, comics, and/or anime, (etc.), chances are, you may already be a part of Fandom culture!

Hosted by our very own Fandom Guru, Tressa, you can expect an excellent evening and a chance to meet, hang out, play games, and participate in Fandom-related activities! We will be discussing a wide range of topics, including, but not limited to, fanfiction, cosplay, fan subculture, fan-created meta, and all things fandom related!

So feel free to join us every Friday at 7:00pm. Groups are always welcome!

Qwiklit's list of 15 Modern Classics You Should Read Right Now

Thursday, Mar 28, 2013 at 7:18pm

Qwiklit.com has recently posted a list of novels that have "earned their eminence and moved a generation some believed was devoid of literacy." The titles are all amazing, award-winning books, and each certainly deserves to be called a modern classic.

While all of the titles can be considered modern classics, some of us booksellers at McNally Robinson can't help but wonder if there aren't other works by the same authors that would better fit the list.
