Those Mysterious Canadians...

Thursday, Sep 05, 2013 at 4:13pm

Joanne Kilbourn is as feisty as ever in The Gifted, the 14th book of the series by Regina's Gail Bowen. This time, Jo and Zack's young daughter Taylor's precocious talent as a painter has drawn the attention of people who may not be at all what they seem.

When a disgraced college lecturer who had been living a poverty-stricken existence is found murdered with £5,000 in his pocket, DCI Banks' suspicions turn to the victims former colleagues in Children of the Revolution by Toronto writer Peter Robinson.

Kathy Reichs, a forensic anthropologist for Quebec's Laboratoire de sciences judiciaires et de médecine légale, returns with Bones of the Lost, featuring forensic anthropologist Tempe Brennan. Tempe's examination of a mysterious hit-and-run victim triggers an investigation into human trafficking.

All three of these titles are out now in hardcover.

The thrill of the chill: Kelley Armstrong's OMENS

Wednesday, Aug 21, 2013 at 5:16pm

Kelley Armstrong has been telling stories since before she could write. Her earliest written efforts were disastrous. If asked for a story about girls and dolls, hers would invariably feature undead girls and evil dolls, much to her teachers' dismay. Today, she continues to spin tales of ghosts and demons and werewolves from her home in southwestern Ontario where she lives with her husband, kids and far too many pets.

Following the conclusion of her epic Women of the Otherworld series, Armstrong launches a brand-new series at the end of August. It is set in Cainsville, a small town as spookily fascinating as Stephen King's Castle Rock or Dean Koontz's Moonlight Bay.

In Omens, Olivia Taylor-Jones has just discovered she's adopted...and the child of convicted serial killers. She flees to Cainsville, Illinois and discovers an unusual small town that's a little too interested in her and her parents.

Omens is now available in hardcover. Order online, or contact your nearest McNally Robinson bookstore to get a copy put on hold.

Kelley Armstrong will be in our Grant Park store at 2:30 pm on September 7th to launch Omens. More details about the event can be found by clicking here. Everyone is welcome (and invited) to attend!

Saints & Sinners: THE FOURTH GOSPEL and I WEAR THE BLACK HAT

Thursday, Aug 15, 2013 at 9:29pm

The Fourth Gospel, the latest book by the popular proponent of a modern, scholarly and authentic Christianity, John Shelby Spong, argues that the last gospel to be written was misinterpreted by the framers of the fourth-century creeds to be a literal account of the life of Jesus when in fact it is a literary retelling of the events in Jesus' life. In other words, it's a story that uses fictional characters, such as Nicodemus and Lazarus, to make its point. Spong recaptures the original message of this gospel and provides a radical new dimension to the claim that in the humanity of Jesus the reality of God has been engaged.

From Chuck Klosterman, "one of America's top cultural critics" (Entertainment Weekly), and "The Ethicist" for The New York Times Magazine, comes I Wear the Black Hat, a book of all original pieces on villains and villainy. Klosterman questions how we understand the concept of villainy. What was so Machiavellian about Machiavelli? Why don't we see Batman the same way we see Bernhard Goetz? And why is Klosterman still obsessed with some kid he knew back in 1985? Blending cultural analysis with self-interrogation, Klosterman delivers perceptive observations on the complexity of the anti-hero in an entertaining and often laugh-out-loud way.
