Man Booker International Prize 2016: Shortlist

The shortlist for this year's Man Booker International Prize, which celebrates the finest in fiction from across the globe, has been announced.
In no particular order, the finalists include:
- A General Theory of Oblivion by José Eduardo Agualusa (Angola), translated by Daniel Hahn (UK)
- The Story of the Lost Child by Elena Ferrante (Italy), translated by Ann Goldstein (USA)
- The Vegetarian by Han Kang (South Korea), translated by Deborah Smith (UK)
- A Strangeness in My Mind by Orhan Pamuk (Turkey), translated by Ekin Oklap (Turkey)
- A Whole Life by Robert Seethaler (Austria), translated by Charlotte Collins (UK)
- The Four Books by Yan Lianke (China), translated by Carlos Rojas (USA)
Each shortlisted author and translator will receive £1,000, while the £50,000 prize will be divided equally between the author and the translator of the winning entry. The winner will be announced on May 16th, 2016.

The finalists for this year's Baileys Women's Prize for Fiction have been announced:
- Cynthia Bond: Ruby
- Anne Enright: The Green Road
- Lisa McInerney: The Glorious Heresies
- Elizabeth McKenzie: The Portable Veblen
- Hannah Rothschild: The Improbability of Love
- Hanya Yanagihara: A Little Life
The winner of the prize — which celebrates the excellence, originality and accessibility in writing by women throughout the world, and comes with a £30,000 award — will be announced on June 8th, 2016.

The shortlists for the 2015/2016 Manitoba Book Awards were announced last week.
The annual awards, which "strive to acknowledge the wit, the art, and the profound dedication of all of those who fill our pages with 'made in Manitoba' literature", are given along with over $30,000 in prizes to various Manitoban writers, illustrators, designers, and publishers.
The winners of the Manitoba Book Awards will be presented at a gala on April 30th, 2016. If you are interested in attending, tickets can be purchased online.

In conjunction with National Poetry Month, the League of Canadian Poets has announced their 2016 shortlists for three different awards. The Gerald Lampert Memorial Award recognizes the best first book of poetry published by a Canadian, while the Pat Lowther Memorial Award considers books of poetry published by Canadian women. The Raymond Souster Award is open to books of poetry by any League of Canadian Poets member.
Winnipeg's Rosanna Deerchild has been shortlisted for the Pat Lowther Memorial Award for her 2015 collection calling down the sky. The winners will be announced June 18. See the full list of nominees after the break:

The nominees for the 2016 Prix Aurora Awards, presented by the Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Association, were announced yesterday. The awards recognize the best works and activities of Canadians in the Sci-Fi and Fantasy genres.
Winnipeg's own Chadwick Ginther (Best English Novel), Sherry Peters (Best English YA Novel), and GMB Chomichuk (Best English Graphic Novel) were among those to receive nominations. Voting by CSFFA members begins June 15, and the winners will be announced in August.
