was awarded the 2007 Scotiabank Giller Prize last night for her novelAccording to the judges--David Bergen, Camilla Gibb and Lorna Goodison--Hay's novel was "in some ways a dazzling virtuoso praise song to Canada and things Canadian, but ultimately, it is a flawlessly crafted and timeless story, masterfully told."
The award was handed out at a black-tie gala in Toronto. The other nominees were Divisadero, for The Assassin's Song, for Effigy, and for A Secret Between Us. The Scotiabank Giller Prize honours the best in Canadian English-language fiction.

The five finalists for the 2007 Scotiabank Giller Prize have seen an average sales increase of 388% in the first week after the shortlist was announced. In the week ending October 14, 2007, A Secret Between Us by saw the highest percent increase at 1200%, followed by Effigy by with 564%. Divisadero by and The Assassin’s Song by , already selling at a robust rate before the shortlist announcement, increased by 83% and 70% respectively, while ’s Late Nights on Air has seen a 22% bump in sales.

Some of Canada's finest Aboriginal writers were honoured at a Gala Dinner and Awards Presentation on Friday, October 19 at the Radisson Hotel in Saskatoon. The wrap up for the Fourth Annual Anskohk Aboriginal Literature Festival featured food, entertainment, and a chance for some of Canada's Aboriginal literati to celebrate together.
