The award was handed out at a black-tie gala in Toronto. The other nominees were Michael Ondaatje for Divisadero, M.G. Vassanji for The Assassin's Song, Alissa York for Effigy, and Daniel Poliquin for A Secret Between Us. The Scotiabank Giller Prize honours the best in Canadian English-language fiction.
