Mark Sakamoto's Forgiveness has been chosen as the champion of this year's Canada Reads competition.
The book follows Sakamoto’s maternal grandfather as a prisoner of war in Japan and his paternal Japanese-Canadian grandmother’s internment in Canada during World War II. It is the true tale of two brave individuals who survived desperate transgressions that threatened to destroy their humanity, and who through their trials learned to forgive. Without this forgiveness their grandson, author Mark Sakamoto, would never have come to be born.
During the Canada Reads debates, Forgiveness was defended by fashion icon and TV host Jeanne Beker. Said Beker: "Forgiveness sheds light on a shameful chapter in our history, but it also shows us that healing is possible with tolerance and compassion. The message for Canadians is a timely one: forgive in order to move forward, but never, ever forget."
