Classical Recording of the Week: LENT AT EPHESUS by The Benedictines of Mary

Friday, Feb 28, 2014 at 4:25pm

In partnership with Winnipeg's Classic 107, we're proud to present our Classical CD of the Week...

The Benedictines of Mary's Lent at Ephesus

The nuns of the Priory of Our Lady of Ephesus -- the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles -- based in Missouri, sing the divine office eight times a day. It was only natural that they should record some of their work for close friends and benefactors, which they have done a few times since 2008. In 2012, a recording for the wider public was made, entitled Advent at Ephesus. It contains a mixture of Gregorian chants and hymns used during the season immediately preceding Christmas, as well as a few carols in English. The blending of the female voices gives a different, yet just as pleasing, perspective to this music, which is more often heard performed by male voices.

Wednesday, Mar 05, 2014 at 6:07pm

After over thirteen years of grooming an eclectic music selection that attracts audiophiles from across the city, our music manager Michael Wolch has been tapped to host the morning radio show on Classic 107.

Our new music manager, Andy Morton, assures a smooth transition. With over twenty-five years in the music business (the Folk Festival, Musiplex, Into the Music, HMV), Andy is poised to make McNally Robinson's music department -- not to mention our great selection of movies on DVD and Blu-Ray -- all you have come to expect, while also adding the flavours of his own unique tastes to an ever-expanding offering of music on CD and vinyl.

So farewell, Michael; you will be missed. And Andy, welcome to the family!

Wednesday, Feb 26, 2014 at 5:47pm

In partnership with Winnipeg's Classic 107, we're proud to present our Jazz CD of the Month...

Gregory Porter's Liquid Spirit

Liquid Spirit marks Gregory Porter's Blue Note Records debut, which arrives on the heels of two critically acclaimed indie label albums that quickly propelled Porter to the upper echelon of contemporary male Jazz singers and earned him two Grammy nominations.

Don Was, President of Blue Note, encouraged Porter to stay true to his artistic vision. "I firmly consider myself a Jazz singer but I enjoy Blues, Southern Soul, and Gospel," Porter says, "Those elements make their way inside my music. And I've always heard them in Jazz."

Classical CD of the Week: MOSAIC by Michael Kolk

Wednesday, Feb 26, 2014 at 4:12pm

In partnership with Winnipeg's Classic 107, we're proud to present our Classical CD of the Week...

Michael Kolk's Mosaic: Classical Guitar Favourites

The highly anticipated release of Mosaic: Classical Guitar Favourites, from classical guitarist Michael Kolk confirms that his serious potential as a musician combining masterful technique and superb musical instincts is now fully realized.

The album contains a nice variety of different eras and genres. Michael works his finger-fueled magic on pieces from composers ranging from Bach to Debussy to Villa-Lobos and the Spanish composers for whom he has special affection, such as Isaac Albeniz, whose classic compositions Rumores de la Caleta and Granada are reprised reverently here, as well as a couple of pieces that are not normally heard on the guitar.

Bach has long been a key component in Kolk's repertoire. "He is a staple of the classical guitar," Michael explains. "Bach is one of those composers where as guitarists we try to prove ourselves worthy to play his music. His compositions are so masterful, and you just try to do them justice."

Kolk's sense of musical adventure is showcased on the gorgeous Debussy piano preludes, The Girl With The Flaxen Hair and Danseuses de Delphes. "I find it is very exciting to play Debussy on the guitar. They are piano pieces but the guitar really lends a new kind of sound palette," he notes.
