Jazz Recording of the Month: TRAVEL GUIDE by Ralph Towner

Thursday, Mar 27, 2014 at 8:59pm

In partnership with Winnipeg's Classic 107, we're proud to present our Jazz Recording of the Month...

Ralph Towner's Travel Guide

An international summit meeting, Travel Guide features US guitarist Ralph Towner, Austrian guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel, and Kazakhstan-born and Australia-raised guitarist Slava Grigoryan. The three musicians first came together in 2005, initially for concerts in Australia, and have since toured widely. A 2009 recording on Muthspiel's Material Records label documented the group's early progress. Ralph Towner subsequently brought the project to ECM and the trio recorded this album in Lugano in August 2012, with Manfred Eicher as producer. Towner has been a key ECM recording artist for more than 40 years, while Muthspiel and Grigoryan make label debuts here. Grigoryan is well known as the preeminent Australian classical guitarist of his generation, and Muthspiel's been an important figure on the transatlantic jazz scene for two decades, with his own bands and as a contributor to groups of Gary Burton, Paul Motian and many others. What all three guitarists share is a strong feeling for structure, a sense for lyrical improvisation and a feeling for space, harnessing instrumental technique to very graceful musical ends. Repertoire features five compositions by Towner, and five by Muthspiel.

Friday, Feb 28, 2014 at 4:16pm

In partnership with Winnipeg's Classic 107, we're proud to present our Classical CD of the Week...

Milos' Aranjuez

For his third album, international chart-topping classical guitarist Milos Karadaglic takes the world-famous Concierto de Aranjuez as the starting point for a journey across the Spanish landscape, paying tribute to the great composers and musicians who placed the modern classical guitar firmly on the international stage.

For the recording of the new album Aranjuez, Milos was joined by the London Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Yannick Nezet-Seguin at the world-famous Abbey Road Studios in London. Aranjuez is a celebration of the most popular Spanish works for guitar and orchestra, which includes Rodrigo's Fantasía para un gentilhombre, and it explores the birth and recognition of the modern guitar in the 20th century.

You can read more about Milos and his music on his website.

Randy Bachman honoured at the Junos

Thursday, Mar 06, 2014 at 8:48pm

Join Randy Bachman in conversation with legendary Winnipeg radio personality Howard Mandshein in the Atrium at McNally Robinson Grant Park, Saturday March 29 at 2:00 pm.

The next day Bachman, along with fellow band mates of the celebrated Winnipeg band, Bachman-Turner Overdrive -- Blair Thornton, Fred Turner and Robin Bachman -- will be honoured at the 43rd Annual JUNO Awards at the MTS Centre when they are inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

Randy Bachman has another reason to be smiling this month. His new book, Tales from Beyond the Tap, hit the shelves in early March. Following on the success of his 2011 book Randy Bachman's Vinyl Tap Stories, Bachman gives rock fans a VIP tour of an extraordinary life in music, telling more great stories from a life in rock -- all the fun, hardships and adventure that haven't been featured on his hit CBC Radio show, Vinyl Tap.

When you've played thousands of gigs over a fifty-year career, from church basements to Madison Square Garden, most of them become a blur, but there are some favourite venues that stand out. Randy shares what he's experienced, from station wagons and six-to-a-room motels to custom coaches, jets and luxury suites from the vantage point of one who's been there and seen it all. Tales from Beyond the Tap offers a rare glimpse behind the man, the music and his popular radio show.
