Library Journal - Jan 16 2025
In this accessible book geared toward beginners, award-winning artist Newey takes the mystery out of drawing the sometimes-complicated shapes of mammals, fish, and birds. After providing a list of tools and materials required for the project (regular paper, pencils, colored pencils, and an eraser will do), he takes readers through a series of examples. Newey begins a typical drawing with basic large shapes that will become the body of an animal. To these he adds smaller, more defined shapes for things like feet, wings, and faces. Finally, he adds details; these might be beaks for birds, ears and toes for foxes and dogs, or horns and tusks for cows and elephants. Each step in the drawing includes clear written instructions for layering these shapes, and as the features are added, the animal springs to life on the page. Newey also provides a "Color Me" sidebar for each design, suggesting colors to shade and shadow the animal into the artist's final drawing.
VERDICT This easy-to-follow beginners' guide will be an excellent addition to a library collection and great for use in creative library programs.
