It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time
About this Item
McNally Robinson P.O.D.
I have been here more than fifty years
Those years and their memories now a blur.
Thoughts of my childhood spent in Britain
Even more clouded by time, more obscure.
I grew up with the sea ever near
In my mind I reflect on that scene.
But fate would decree a move for me
When I was a boy of only eighteen.
This country had so much to offer
I decided to take up the call.
To embrace the new and unknown here
Never knowing when or if I might fall.
The chance to succeed on my own terms
A driving force I could not resist.
Life has been good. I have a few regrets
Though dear friends and family I still miss.
Who would have guessed I would settle here
On the prairies so far from the sea.
The golden wheat waving in the wind
An ocean of grain that helped comfort me.
I give thanks to those who have helped me
Settle here in this wonderful land.
Canada gave me opportunities
But I often needed a helping hand.
So now with my children all adults
Grandchildren to make my life complete.
They all tell me I once chose wisely
Trading sea waves for the oceans of wheat.
