Monsters of the Deep

Description
A spectacular collection of weird yet real creatures from the darkest depths of the oceans.
In this book, readers get a look into the watery deep and find 14 of nature's strangest creatures. Intricately drawn artworks and 200 stunning photographs highlight the extraordinary features of each animal's anatomy and survival tactics, such as bioluminescence to ward off predators and jet propulsion (in one case, jet vomit) to escape quickly.
The monsters include deep-sea fish, squid, jellyfish, and microscopic life, such as:
- Black dragonfish, the inspiration for the parasitic Alien monsters
- Deep-sea hatchet fish, google-eyed and bioluminescent
- Deep-sea mussels that use bacterial "fuel cells" to harness energy from hydrothermal vents
- Deep-sea shrimp that spew bioluminescent vomit to escape predators
- Eyelight fish turn their "flashlight" eyes off and on while hunting
- Japanese firefly squid, bioluminescent, whose blue flashes attract small fish on which it feeds
- Lanternshark, totally bioluminescent in the deep sea
- Pelican eel, with a comically oversized mouth and a tail so long that it gets tied in knots.
Monsters of the Deep is an exciting, informative collection that will interest readers of all ages.

Readers will eagerly choose this book from the shelf due to the intriguing cover of a scary looking angler fish on a black background with shiny blue highlights. The photographs and lifelike drawings will sustain interest as children read and flip through the pages of this beautiful book. Text boxes, captions, and charts help the reader navigate through the collection of animals from the darkest depths of the ocean.
Every boy and girl who loves books about sharks will grab this one for its cover and title alone. Incredible photography accompanies astounding facts about each creature... 5 out of 5.
This attractive volume covers a wide variety of unusual animals. Devoting a spread to each creature, the book describes basic information, such as diet, habitat, size, and unique abilities. The layouts are dramatic, featuring fascinating, sometimes stunning, photos and drawings set against black backgrounds, such as frightening spreads of a wolf spider and a giant desert hairy scorpion. Succinct, intriguing facts will keep readers enthralled... Monsters of the Deep includes (a) wide variety of ocean inhabitants: whales, sharks, and turtles, as well as the flashlight fish and comb jelly (though categorizing some of them, such as the beluga whale or the Weddell seal, as "monsters" seems a stretch). A charming look at some odd creatures.
Infotainment with a marine cast that includes ratfish, snipe eels and several all-mouth anglerfish among the sharks, whales and other usual suspects. Tailor-made for budding zoologists as well as casual browsers.
