The author is an experienced outdoor recreation instructor and guide. He has led many mountaineering, mountain biking, whitewater, and flatwater canoeing expeditions. In 2003, he was a mountain climber for the Discovery Channel's Mount Everest expedition, where he spent two months climbing and filming on Mount Everest. He has also climbed a 21,000 ft. peak in the Himalayas, trekked independently to Everest's base camp, and provided guiding services on Mount Kilimanjaro.
