Description

Two young sisters are taken from their home and family. Powerless to change their fortunes, they are separated, and each put into different foster homes. Yet over the years, the bond between them grows. As they each make their way in a society that is, at times, indifferent, hostile, and violent, one embraces her Métis identity, while the other tries to leave it behind. In the end, out of tragedy, comes an unexpected legacy of triumph and reclamation.

Beatrice Mosionier was born in St. Boniface, Manitoba. The youngest of four children, she grew up in foster homes. After a short time living in Toronto, where she attended college, she returned to Winnipeg. Following the death of two sisters to suicide, Beatrice decided to write In Search of April Raintree. First published in 1983, it has become a Canadian classic.

On the Same Page

On the Same Page: Manitoba Reads! is a new project that aims to get Manitobans reading, and talking about, one book at the same time. From October 2008 to April 2009, the campaign will encourage Manitobans to read In Search of April Raintree, by Manitoba author Beatrice Mosionier.

In the first undertaking of its kind in the province, On The Same Page (OTSP), a Winnipeg Foundation project in partnership with the foundation’s Literacy for Life Fund, will begin a campaign to encourage all Manitobans to read or re-read the renowned homegrown novel.

Organizers unanimously chose In Search of April Raintree. In its 25th anniversary year, this novel is a classic of Canadian literature and touches on themes and issues relevant to every Manitoban and every Canadian. Its content resonates with readers today as strongly as it did when first published in 1983.

Participants are encouraged to engage in discussion with other readers, create a piece of art or writing inspired by the themes and content of the book, and to visit the OTSP website, http://www.onthesamepage.ca, to share the experience of reading In Search of April Raintree. In addition to an OTSP book tour to Churchill, MB that will take place during November 2008, the author is available for readings and workshops throughout the campaign.
