She has written more than 25 books, includingWriters Without Borders: Writing and Teaching Writing in Troubled Times( 2008) andThe Seven Deadly Virtues and Other Lively Essays(2008). She has served as President of the National Council of Writing Program Administrators, 1988-90 and chaired the Division of Teaching Writing and the Division of Prose Writing of the Modern Language Association.
