But what starts as an exotic vacation quickly turns into a dangerous treasure hunt. Her father's newest clients, the Yamada family, are the victims of a high-profile art robbery: van Gogh sketches have been stolen from their home, and, until they can produce the corresponding painting, everyone's lives are in danger -- including Violet's and her father's.

Diana Renn has done an awe-inspiring job with the creation of this book. With a lively and fast paced plot, and settings like Seattle all the way to Tokyo, this is a book that you won't be able to put down. But with no outlet other than vodka, her sorrow is close to driving the hyper-rational Catherine mad. The only person who knew of their affair - her boss - tries to distract and rescue her by giving her a project that demands all of her attention: the reconstruction of an elaborate nineteenth-century automaton. In the crates containing its bits and pieces, Catherine discovers a series of notebooks written by Henry Brandling, who, in 1854, commissioned the extraordinary, eerie mechanical creature in an attempt to bring joy to his consumptive little son. Henry's is a personal account of his adventures in the wilds of Germany, a diary that brings Catherine unexpected comfort, fellow feeling and wonder. But it is the automaton itself, in its beautiful, uncanny imitation of life, that links Henry's life to Catherine's, as both are confronted with the miracle and catastrophe of human invention, and the body's astonishing chemistry of love and feeling.

Now she's returned - to her old life, her family, her boyfriend - before she's banished back to the underworld . . . this time forever. She has six months before the Everneath comes to claim her, six months for good-byes she can't find the words for, six months to find redemption, if it exists.

Everneath is an intriguing story and although I really enjoyed it, I felt as though the action never really took off. I liked seeing how Brodi Ashton's wonderfully seamless characters would react to the
situation at hand. While the story was great she sometimes used an unfavorable choice of words and
overused certain words. I really loved how she incorporated Greek myths into her tale to help create the
foundation for the Everneath; Ashton's writing made it more believable and interesting as I am a huge
fan of Greek mythology.

- Cassie, a Two Thumbs Up reviewer

Everneath is now available at a McNallys near you.

This seemingly ordinary event, nevertheless, is interesting because Mr. Putin never really left power when he swapped it for the office of the Prime Minister in 2008. If he is successfully to complete his third term in office, which expires in 2018, Mr. Putin will equal years in power of the late Soviet Communist leader Leonid Brezhnev. What implications will Putin's coming back to the forefront have for Russia and the rest of the world? Join us in the classroom as we discuss and try to answer these questions based on Putin's previous record and analysis of the situation both in Russia itself and internationally.

Tuesday, May 29

Time: 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.

Cost: $25 for one class

Pre-registration required.

What will it be like to live in a world where growth is over?

Rubin, an economist and resource analyst, is certain that the world's governments are getting it wrong. Instead of moving us toward economic recovery, measures being taken around the globe right now are digging us into a deeper hole. Both politicians and economists are missing the fact that the real engine of economic growth has always been cheap, abundant fuel and resources. But that era is over. The end of cheap oil, Rubin argues, signals the end of growth - and the end of easy answers to renewing prosperity.

Rubin's own equation is clear: with China and India sucking up the lion's share of the world's ever more limited resources, the rest of us will have to make do with less. But is this all bad? Can less actually be more? Rubin points out that there is no research to show that people living in countries with hard-charging economies are happier, and plenty of research to show that some of the most contented people on the planet live in places with no-growth or slow-growth GDPs. But it doesn't matter whether it's bad or good, it's the new reality: our world is not only about to get smaller, our day-to-day lives are about to be a whole lot different.

In particular Mantel explores one of the most mystifying and frightening episodes in English history: the destruction of Anne Boleyn. The description was exquisite. Knutsson creates intrigue with Cassandra's mysterious power and her brother Paul's enigmatic visions. But for me, that's all it was. A lot of build up to a so-so outcome. The tension never escalated to the point where I found myself turning pages, dying to hear what came next. There was simply a lot of 'I can sense something horrible coming' and 'too bad this good feeling won't last long'. When things finally did take a turn for the worse, it was very gradual, and it all happened in a way that was very disengaging. Despite the initially engaging premise, the story fell a bit flat. I would not recommend this book.

- Rachel, a Two Thumbs Up reviewer

Shadows Cast by Stars will be released on June 5th.

Iris is allowed to help out at her Pop's detective agency as long as she follows his rules and learns from his technique. But when Iris uncovers details about her mother's supposed suicide, suddenly Iris is thrown headfirst into her most intense and personal case yet.

Anti-Semitism, murder mystery and romance are only three of the numerous topics touched upon by The Girl is Trouble. Iris Anderson makes a strong lead, although not a very good detective. Other than Iris, only a smattering of other characters are developed as it is told in first-person and she has no idea who to trust. Plot lines crisscross throughout and there are too many red herrings to count. Set in a very realistic World War II-era U.S. and captured with emotion and detail, I'd recommend this book to anyone who can keep track of many stories in one.

- Eva, a Two Thumbs Up reviewer

The Girl is Trouble will be released on June 22nd.

Jeff Rubin captured a lot of our attention with his last book, Why Your World is About to Get a Whole Lot Smaller. What I liked most about it was that Rubin was not saying that the world was going to hell, just that the world was going to change. It was, relatively speaking, a hopeful book.

Rubin looks to be giving the same spin to our future in his new book, The End of Growth, if I may judge from his subtitle, But is That All Bad? In this book Rubin writes that instead of moving us toward economic recovery, measures being taken around the globe right now are digging us into a deeper hole. Both politicians and economists are missing the fact that the real engine of economic growth has always been cheap, abundant fuel and resources. But that era is over. The end of cheap oil, Rubin argues, signals the end of growth--and the end of easy answers to renewing prosperity.

I, for one, can't wait to read it.

Instead of running air raid drills like most girls her age, she lies about her age and trains to become a spy. Now known by her secret agent persona, Adele Blanchard, she finds herself parachuting over German-occupied France under the cover of darkness to join the secret Resistance movement. Prepared to die for her cause, Adele wasn't expecting to make a new best friend in her fellow agent or fall for a handsome American pilot. With the brutality of war ever present, can Adele dare to dream of a future where the world is at peace and she is free to live and love of her own accord?

I love historical fiction and after you read Violins of Autumn you just
might too. This perfectly paced novel by Amy McAuley is very similar to the fantasy stories that are currently popular like The Mortal Instruments. Betty, also known as Adele, is an agent who drops in to France during World War II. She faces hunger, grief and near death experiences to pass on information that will lead to the entrance of the Allies and the Resistance movement. Although this tragedy is a part of history, I still found it unpredictable. If you read this, I know you will not be disappointed.

- Tess, a Two Thumbs Up reviewer

Most reviews are given from a literary perspective--that is, from the perspective of an individual who has some knowledge of what qualifies as "good" and what is relegated to the dreaded nether-regions of "bad" writing. Whilst I acknowledge the superior knowledge and education of some people--concerning literature--I have never myself been able to take on this role with any degree of comfort. A lot of my creative energy springs from a general state of open-mindedness, concerning what I see and what I read. If you are of such a temperament, all judgement of good and bad appear extremely subjective--to the point that speculations of quality can seem academic, to say the least.

As a result of this inherent self-doubt, concerning my place in the world of literary criticism, I prefer to write my recommendations purely from the perspective of an author. I may not have found an adequate yard-stick to measure literary quality, as yet, but I have my own private yard-stick to estimate how much fun an author may have had, writing a given work. I can usually guess how much fun an author had by how original and fresh the writing or the concept is. When an author is having fun, it shows in their writing. Not only are other writers intrigued--innately detecting the sense of fun which spurs the author on--but any serious reader will likely be able to catch on to the fun and be carried away on that tide, along with the writer. I recommend these books based entirely on that sense of fun.

Click *More* to read further...

These intuitions feel like self-evident truths, making us righteously certain that those who see things differently are wrong. Haidt shows us how these intuitions differ across cultures, including the cultures of the political left and right. He blends his own research findings with those of anthropologists, historians, and other psychologists to draw a map of the moral domain, and he explains why conservatives can navigate that map more skillfully than can liberals. He then examines the origins of morality, overturning the view that evolution made us fundamentally selfish creatures. But rather than arguing that we are innately altruistic, he makes a more subtle claim--that we are fundamentally groupish. It is our groupishness, he explains, that leads to our greatest joys, our religious divisions, and our political affiliations. In a stunning final chapter on ideology and civility, Haidt shows what each side is right about, and why we need the insights of liberals, conservatives, and libertarians to flourish as a nation.

He achieves that combination of literary quality and plot-driven story that Lev Grossman, in a Time Magazine story about Michael Chabon, described as "[T]he highbrow and the lowbrow, once kept chastely separate ... now hooking up, [and] you can almost see the future of literature coming." My favourite William Boyd novel is Any Human Heart, the fictional biography of Logan Mountstuart who inhabits the arts, books and spy circles of the early twentieth century and who meets many of the big names associated with those worlds. Boyd also wrote the screenplay for the TV adaptation of Any Human Heart, which I also recommend.

His new novel, Waiting for Sunrise, is set in Vienna in 1913. Lysander Rief, a young English actor in town seeking psychotherapy for a troubling ailment, becomes caught up in a feverish affair with a beautiful, enigmatic woman. When she presses rape charges, however, he is mystified. Only a carefully plotted escape with the help of two mysterious British diplomats saves him from trial.

The frenzied getaway sets off a chain of events that dismantles Rief's life as he knows it. He returns to London hoping to banish from memory his traumatic ordeals abroad, but soon the men who helped coordinate his escape recruit him to carry out the murder of a complete stranger. His lover from Vienna shows up nonchalantly at a party, ready to resume their liaison, and before he knows where his new life has taken him, Rief soon finds himself on the trail of a traitor a man whose bizarre connection to his own family proves a cruel twist of fate.

Watch in May, when William Boyd will be featured as our Author of the Month.
