Canadian science fiction author Robert J. Sawyer has sold his novel Flashforward to ABC for development into a television series. The pilot script was written by Brannon Braga and David S. Goyer. Sawyer, who served as a consultant on the pilot (a role he will continue with the ongoing series) also plans to write a first season episode.

Speaking tomorrow at the Polo Park location is Toronto poet JonArno Lawson, along with Douglas Burnet Smith, on whether or not poetic language is a way of thinking. Lawson's latest book, A Voweller's Bestiary, is a fantastic collection of children's verse sans anapestic gallop or gratuitous limericking. Rather, his chosen form is the lipogram.

Sunburst Award Winners Announced

Nalo Hopkinson's novel The New Moon's Arms has won the author her second Sunburst Award. She previously won for Skin Folk. 2008 also saw an award presented for the first time for Young Adult literature. This year's winner in that category was Anthem of a Reluctant Prophet by Joanne Proulx.

The Sunburst Awards are a juried prize celebrating excellence in Canadian speculative fiction.

Fletch Author Dies

Gregory McDonald, whose Fletch series of mystery novels sold millions of copies, died at the age of 71, after being diagnosed with cancer. McDonald, also a journalist for the Boston Globe, was twice a winner of the Edgar Award and the author of 26 books.
