I love it when a book from a genre that I don't usually read grabs my attention. The City of Ember is Science Fiction for those who love it, and those who don't. Ember is a carefully controlled society where all things happen as they should, and children grow as they should, taking on the jobs they are assigned, somewhat reminiscent of the Giver by Lois Lowry. But, things are not all right in Ember; they are running out of food, the lights are flickering, and people are starting to grumble. Lina and Doon, 12 year old graduates of Ember School set out to discover what is wrong, and rock their world in doing so. I loved the characters, and the fast paced story kept me intrigued right from the beginning until the absolutely shocking final chapters.
