The third novel in Ballard's loose trilogy examining technological culture. A man moves into a relatively new apartment tower block, one of three in an enormous complex. As the apartments are rented, conflicts develop between the residents, who split into factions, and eventually there is a complete breakdown in the social order. The inhabitants begin roaming the tower block like animals, staking out territory with weapons and threats.
