Sit back in the comfort of the classroom and enjoy a photojournalist’s perspective of Winnipeg’s downtown architecture. The class braids together two strands of narrative to explore two bodies of knowledge. Winnipeg Historian and photographer George Siamandas presents an architectural tour of the downtown, showing the greatest examples of architectural achievement in all periods. At the same time, the buildings illustrated belong in the context of their times and the dramatic growth spurts of the city. The presentation focuses on Exchange District architecture from 1880 to 1920, on a perspective of Portage Avenue from 1905 to the present, and on Broadway from the 1960s through to present day.
