Winner of the 1999 Booker Prize. David Lurie, middle aged and twice divorced, is a scholar who falls into disgrace after having an impulsive affair with a student. He resigns his teaching position in Cape Town and retreats to an isolated smallholding owned by his daughter, Lucy. As the balance of power in the country shifts, he and Lucy become victims of a disturbing attack which reveals the faultlines in their relationship.
