Eight top managers of a powerful oil conglomerate conspire to cover-up a deliberate dumping in the Atlantic Ocean of an extremely toxic chemical. It is a waste by-product in the company's manufacture of a much sought after and profitable industrial plastic that is stronger and more versatile than steel. The company ostensibly undertakes an exploratory cruise along the Gulf Stream in search of undersea oil deposits, but its actual purpose is to assess the toxin's dispersal in the ocean. In the process, it discovers the toxin's far reaching devastation of marine life and its lethal effect on the human food chain.
During the final days of the cruise, two of the company's scientists aboard the exploratory ship accidentally discover a strange undersea organism. On the ship's return to the Port of New York, the specimen is spirited away by one of its discoverers and sent to Nova Scotia to a Canadian colleague, a marine scientist who is preparing to deliver a scientific paper at a marine biology conference in New York City. He and his lab assistant, who is also his lover, examine the specimen and determine that it is a completely new form of life. It has, because of its incredible beneficial nutritional and healing properties, the potential to alleviate humanity's future food crises and health requirements. However, the specimen's nutritional and healing properties are locked into a highly compressed matrix. A way must be found to release its nutritional and remedial bounty. However, all who come into contact with the specimen experience either a powerful spiritual awakening, or conversely, one that is horrible and fatal.
During the examination of the organism, a minute trace of the company's toxin is found on it and is documented as a surface contaminant. The two scientists decide to incorporate the specimen and their findings into the paper they are to deliver at the conference. However, the mentioning of the contaminant threatens the exposure of the company's conspiracy, thus placing their lives in jeopardy. The company hires two henchmen to eliminate them and to repossess the specimen.
Enter the Keepers of Mon, an ancient Jewish sect charged with preserving the only remaining remnant of the Biblical manna that God has commanded to be preserved "throughout the generations". Unknown to the story's main characters, the marine scientist, his assistant, his son and father who have joined them in New York for a vacation reunion, and the eight oil company conspirators, the Keepers of Mon believe that the mysterious organism is the manna of God. The Keepers undertake to protect the unwary protagonists from the conspirator's clutches. With the help of a befriended NYPD detective and an FBI agent, the company's conspiracy is gradually unraveled, but only in part; because, known only to one of the conspirators, a much more powerful and sinister entity hovers in the background, one whose genocidal agenda, with its use of the toxin, is the most diabolical and devastating the world has ever known.
