Defying the odds, and British bookmakers, Aravind Adiga's The White Tiger was awarded the 2008 Man Booker Prize. The 33 year old first time novelist will receive fifty thousand pounds in prize money, and if past trends hold true, an international bestseller.

Nobel Prize for Literature Awarded

Congratulations to Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio of France who was awarded the 2008 Nobel Prize for Literature. Le Clizio ,the author of over thirty books, is also one of the most translated of modern French authors. The award, worth roughly 1.6 million dollars Canadian, was established by Alfred Nobel in 1901.


British Fantasy Award Winners Announced

Ramsay Campbell's The Grin of the Dark has won the August Derleth Award for Best Novel at this year's British Fantasy Awards. American Scott Lynch, who has been making waves with his Gentlemen Bastards series, won the Sydney J. Bounds Award for Best Newcomer.

The Rogers Writers' Trust Fiction Prize recognizes Canadian writers of exceptional talent for the year's best novel or short-story collection.

The Writers' Trust Non-Fiction Prize is given for a work that demonstrates highest literary merit.

Robert J. Sawyer's Flashforward on ABC

Canadian science fiction author Robert J. Sawyer has sold his novel Flashforward to ABC for development into a television series. The pilot script was written by Brannon Braga and David S. Goyer. Sawyer, who served as a consultant on the pilot (a role he will continue with the ongoing series) also plans to write a first season episode.
