Classical Recording of the Week: RECOMPOSED: VIVALDI - THE FOUR SEASONS

by Tyler Vitt - Monday, Apr 28, 2014 at 10:07am

In partnership with Winnipeg's Classic 107, we're proud to present our Classical CD of the Week...

Max Richter's Recomposed: Vivaldi - The Four Seasons

British composer Max Richter, whose best-known works include the award-winning score for Ari Folman's animated film Waltz with Bashir, has brought Antonio Vivaldi's masterpiece The Four Seasons into the present for Recomposed, opening up the work to an entirely new listenership. At the same time, his respect for the original and its performance history mean that seasoned classical music lovers will also find plenty to enjoy in this recomposition.

Richter's score is performed on the album by virtuoso violinist Daniel Hope and Berlin's Konzerthaus Chamber Orchestra. At the helm is André de Ridder, the composer's own choice for this project and one of the most fascinating and versatile conductors working today, having collaborated with the Philharmonia Orchestra, Gorillaz, jazz musician Uri Caine and contemporary music group Ensemble musikFabrik, among others.

Of his work for the Recomposed series, Max Richter says the challenge was "to create a new score, an experimental hybrid, that constantly references 'Vivaldi' but also 'Richter' and that is current but simultaneously preserves the original spirit of this great work".

This set contains both a DVD and CD.

Classical Recording of the Week: CHASING PIANOS by Lisitsa & Nyman

by Tyler Vitt - Monday, Apr 14, 2014 at 10:05am

In partnership with Winnipeg's Classic 107, we're proud to present our Classical CD of the Week...

Lisitsa & Nyman's Chasing Pianos

A coming together of two artists with enormous followings: Valentina Lisitsa, with her dazzling artistry and hundreds of thousands of followers on YouTube, and Michael Nyman, with his hugely popular film soundtracks.

This release, in the year of Nyman's 70th birthday, features tracks from his multi-award-winning score for the 1993 smash hit film The Piano.

Acclaimed for his music's innovation, punchy simplicity and universal appeal, Nyman, during his career as a music critic, coined the term 'minimalism' for an emergent musical genre -- one to which he would make extensive contributions in many of his early scores and inspire a vast global audience.

The disc is packed full with 77 minutes of material, full of irresistible energy. The album includes all ten solo piano transcriptions from The Piano, together on one album for the first time.
