Classical Recording of the Week: John Holloway's Pavans

by Tyler Vitt - Monday, Jul 07, 2014 at 10:03am

In partnership with Winnipeg's Classic 107, we're proud to present our Classical CD of the Week...

John Holloway's Pavans & Fantasies From The Age Of Dowland

John Dowland's Lachrimae Pavans is considered one of the greatest works in the canon of English chamber music. Based upon his famous song "Flow My Teares", the seven pavans -- Seaven Teares, as Dowland called them -- present an extraordinary exploration of the contrapuntal and harmonic possibilities offered by the theme. In this remarkable recording, baroque violinist John Holloway creates a concert programme around the lachrimae Pavans. Threaded between Dowland's masterpieces are works of other major composers of his era -- Henry Purcell, William Lawes, John Jenkins, Thomas Morley and Matthew Locke. In bringing together these works of strongly contrasting colour and character Holloway and company give us a vivid sense of the great flowering of consort music which took place in England in the 17th century.

Classical Recording of the Week: Heinz Holliger's Aschenmusik

by Tyler Vitt - Monday, Jun 30, 2014 at 10:51am

In partnership with Winnipeg's Classic 107, we're proud to present our Classical CD of the Week...

Heinz Holliger's Aschenmusik

Heinz Holliger's lifelong fascination with the music of Robert Schumann finds further expression on this newest release: on Aschenmusik, a new interpretation of the Swiss oboist-composer's "Romancendres" is framed by Schumann's own works. "Romancendres" refers to the lost "Cello Romances" which Clara Schumann burned on Brahms's advice, an act of destruction which outraged Holliger and fuelled the composition of this "music from the ashes" in 2003. It's a portrait of Schumann, packed with quotations, projected like a lifetime passing through the mind of a dying man.

The new double CD by Mutter and Orkis, "The Silver Album" with the world premiere recordings of Penderecki's "La Follia" and Previn's violin sonata No. 2; the recordings of Massenet's "Méditation from Thaïs" and Ravel's "Pièce en forme de Habanera" are also new. These 40 minutes of new music are joined by sonatas by Beethoven, Brahms, Fauré and Mozart, as well as a selection of legendary encores by the duo, including for example "Beau Soir" by Debussy or Kreisler's "Caprice viennois op. 2".
