Jazz Recording of the Month for August: Jarrett and Haden's LAST DANCE

by Tyler Vitt - Monday, Aug 04, 2014 at 12:05pm

In partnership with Winnipeg's Classic 107, we're proud to present our Jazz Album of the Month...

Keith Jarrett and Charlie Haden's Last Dance

Keith Jarrett and Charlie Haden broaden the scope of their duo project to showcase jazz classics like Thelonious Monk's "'Round Midnight" and Bud Powell's spritely "Dance Of The Infidels". Love songs, however, are to the fore in this selection, with tender versions of "My Old Flame", "My Ship", "It Might As Well Be Spring", "Everything Happens To Me", and "Every Time We Say Goodbye" as well as versions of "Where Can I Go Without You" and "Goodbye" which are every bit as touching as the Jasmine renditions.

"When we play together it's like two people singing," said Jarrett of his reunion with Haden. The intentions of the song are honoured, the shades of meaning in a melody or a lyric explored instrumentally. As Charlie Haden put it, "Keith really listens, and I listen. That's the secret. It's about listening." The music of Last Dance was recorded at Keith Jarrett?s home studio.

Classical Recording of the Week: Central Band of the RBL's FOREVER

by Tyler Vitt - Monday, Aug 04, 2014 at 12:05pm

In partnership with Winnipeg's Classic 107, we're proud to present our Classical CD of the Week...

Central Band of the Royal British Legion's Forever

The Prime Minister, comedians, soap stars, Hollywood actors and the cast of War Horse, are brought together in an extraordinary album of spoken word and music, marking the most haunting moments of World War One.

The unprecedented line-up, which includes Eastenders star Danny Dyer, Game of Thrones actor Sean Bean, Cold Feet star John Thomson, comedian Sarah Millican and broadcasters James Naughtie and Stephen Fry, will forge new links to the valour of the most courageous heroes of World War One.

Following months of painstaking research, The Royal British Legion and the Victoria Cross Trust also tracked down descendants of a group of Victoria Cross recipients, who join the celebrity line-up for a unique collection of recordings compiled to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of the War in 1914.

The album also features vintage music from the time, recorded by The Central Band of The Royal British Legion who recreated the sounds and atmosphere of classic tracks such as It s a long way to Tipperary, Keep the home fires burning and Pack up your troubles. Also featured is a bugle that was played on the battlefields of Belgium and France.

The album is a truly unique and painstaking collaboration according to Royal British Legion Director of Fundraising Charles Byrne."We are very grateful to the Victoria Cross Trust for their great dedication in helping source descendants of those whose selfless courage was recognised with the VC.
