Holding on to the Beauty of Life and Death

by David Knipe - Monday, Mar 31, 2014 at 3:20pm

This year's Academy Award winner for Best Foreign Picture is currently playing at the Globe Cinema. The film is a visually splendorous meditation on the ways in which we seek out beauty in our lives as a way to postpone death. I cannot recommend this film enough. It retroactively shot up to a spot in my Top 5 films of last year. Go see it if you have the chance!

If you can't make it out to the Globe to see it on the big screen, worry not! We have copies of the Criterion Blu Ray/DVD combo in stock! With Criterion's magnificent attention to detail, and the calibre of the film itself, this is sure to be one of 2014's best releases.

Musical Chairs: Goodbye, Michael; Hello, Andy!

by Tyler Vitt - Wednesday, Mar 05, 2014 at 6:26pm

After over thirteen years of grooming an eclectic music selection that attracts audiophiles from across the city, our music manager Michael Wolch has been tapped to host the morning radio show on Classic 107.

Our new music manager, Andy Morton, assures a smooth transition. With over twenty-five years in the music business (the Folk Festival, Musiplex, Into the Music, HMV), Andy is poised to make McNally Robinson's music department -- not to mention our great selection of movies on DVD and Blu-Ray -- all you have come to expect, while also adding the flavours of his own unique tastes to an ever-expanding offering of music on CD and vinyl.

So farewell, Michael; you will be missed. And Andy, welcome to the family!

British TV: Downton Abbey & Doc Martin

by Tyler Vitt - Thursday, Feb 20, 2014 at 7:53pm

Downton Abbey: Season 4
DVD & Blu-ray
Downton Abbey, the British period drama television series set in Yorkshire, depicts the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants in the post-Edwardian era and the effects which the great events in history have on their lives and on the British social hierarchy. The series has received critical acclaim from television critics, won numerous accolades and was recognized by Guinness World Records as the most critically acclaimed English-language television series of 2011. By the third series, it had become one of the most widely watched television shows in the world. The fourth season is now available in a three disc DVD or Blu-ray box set.

Doc Martin: Series 6
DVD
Doc Martin stars Martin Clunes as the brash "Doc" Martin Ellingham who finds himself back home in a Cornish village after his illustrious medical career in London goes awry. The townspeople are not used to the doctor?s blunt opinions and insensitive manners, often leading to mayhem in the town of Portwenn. Even on his own wedding day, the Doc is all scowls. The calamitous honeymoon that follows and the adjustments to married life don?t serve to improve his mood. The sixth collection in the series features 8 episodes on 2 discs and includes over an hour of behind-the-scene segments and a photo gallery.
