My Sweet Prairie: A collection of embroidered fibre art

"I am a full time fibre artist, specializing in freestyle machine sewing and hand embroidery. My creations are expressions of my love for the prairies and are inspired by my own personal photographs. This technique is commonly referred to as ‘thread paintings’. I am constantly amazed by the texture and intricate beauty that can be achieved by working with threads, and am excited to continue my work as I see my skills and art improve with each new piece."

Monika Kinner-Whalen was born and raised on the Canadian prairie. She is a member of the Embroiderers’ Association of Canada, the Saskatoon Quilters’ Guild, and a juried member of the Saskatchewan Craft Council. An extremely positive public response to her work has gained her exhibition invitations, awards, media attention, teaching & public speaking opportunities, as well as commissions locally, nationally, and internationally. Monika has been published several times in Canada’s A Needle Pulling Thread magazine, Quilters Connection magazine, and also in Sophie Long’s book Mastering the Art of Embroidery out of the U.K. You can find out more about Monika’s art at www.mysweetprairie.blogspot.com.

Materials:  thread, fabric, silk ribbon, decorative yarn, raffia paper, tulle, cotton and silk floss (commercially and hand dyed). Free machine stitched and hand embroidered on canvas. All materials used are acid free.

***Please note: The majority of these fine art embroideries are professionally framed with 3” wide floating mats to ensure the glass does not come into contact with the fibres.  As with any art, please take care of these original thread paintings by avoiding contact with prolonged, direct sunlight to avoid bleaching of fabric and threads. Glass may also be removed after purchasing or replaced with UV safe Museum quality non-glare glass at the buyer’s expense.
