Author of the Month: J. G. Ballard
James Graham Ballard was born in Shanghai, China in 1930. His recent novels are British bestsellers
Cocaine Nights (1996)
and
Super-Cannes (2000).
Ballard's work is a unique fusion of action adventure and science fiction with elements of psychiatry, surrealism and postmodernism wedded to pulp narratives. He is best known as the author of Empire of the Sun (1984),
a novel about his wartime experiences in China, and
Crash (1973),
a disturbing novel about the erotic potential of car
wrecks.
His latest book is something of a departure for Ballard. It is a memoir, a fascinating account of a unique writer's extraordinary life.
Miracles of Life opens and closes in Shanghai,
the city where he was born, and where he spent most of World War II interned with his family in a Japanese concentration camp. In the intervening chapters, Ballard recounts the experiences which would
fundamentally shape his writing, while simultaneously providing a striking social analysis of the fragmented post-war Britain that lies behind many of his novels.
