Small Works Series

by D - Tuesday, Mar 02, 2010 at 9:57am

Small Works Series in Prairie Ink Restaurant & Bakery

Starting March 10, McNally Robinson will host monthly art exhibitions in Prairie Ink Restaurant. Each show will consist of approximately two dozen works that will hang for one month. The first three one-person shows will feature Winnipeg artists Keith Wood, Roger LaFrenière, and Brigitte Dion.

The first evening of each show, McNally Robinson will host a reception where the artist will speak about the works shown. Works will be on sale throughout the month. The small works display space in Prairie Ink is dedicated to art pieces no deeper than 30".

Keith Wood, who exhibits regularly at Ken Segal Gallery in Winnipeg and at Ossington 129 in Toronto, will open his show on March 8 at 7:30 pm. Wood is an accomplished abstract impressionist who works primarily in encaustic (pigmented molten wax). For the Prairie Ink show he will exhibit a series of pieces on literary themes titled Books/les livres. www.theartofkeithwood.ca

Roger LaFrenière, an established artist and graphic designer, alternates between abstraction and landscape in his acrylic paintings. His show, opening on April 5 at 8 pm, will present both styles. www.rogerlafreniere.com.
  • Brigitte Dion's show will open on May 10. Dion is undertaking a new direction in her art and this show will be the first to represent her new body of work.

For years the wall space in Prairie Ink has been dedicated to a gallery of photographs of writers who have won McNally Robinson literary awards. These photos will be moved from the restaurant to a prominent bulkhead in the middle of the bookstore, where there will be space for more authors as the McNally Robinson prizes (which have been presented for 15 years) are awarded in the future.

  • Joan Thomas' Night Table Recommendations

I've been reading funny books, it seems, and books with a satiric edge. Oh, just looking for laughs to get me through the winter. And these are all Canadian writers!

    Luc Leestemaker's Night Table recommendations

by McNally Robinson - Saturday, Jan 30, 2010 at 1:08pm

Especially because I spend so much time in the studio, where paint and intuition rule, I feel it's important to feed that other part of my brain when I'm not painting; by reading. I'll admit that I devoured an awful lot more literature earlier in my life than I do now. But aside from my beloved weekly New Yorker magazine, which is a wonderful cheater's way of being intimately -and instantly- informed on all current matters that may hit the dinner party conversations, I always have a few new discoveries ready to be broken in. Here are two books that are on top of the stack right now.
