Jasmina Odor and Sheri Benning (Reading and Signing)

Thursday Nov 02 2017 7:00 pm, Saskatoon, Travel Alcove

Join us for a dual-author reading with Jasmina Odor and Sheri Benning.

Through the stories in You Can’t Stay Here (Thistledown Press), we are transported to the warm Adriatic Sea, rented rooms, wartime frontlines, and Canadian suburbia. We fall in love with those conflicted by their broken families, as well as immigrants, travellers, and refugees as they embark on their difficult searches for place and finding a home.

Jasmina Odor was born in Croatia and immigrated to Canada in 1993. Her fiction and reviews have appeared in many Canadian magazines and anthologies, including The New Quarterly, and The Malahat Review. In 2014, her story “His” won the Howard O’Hagan Award for Short Story, and silver at the Alberta Magazine Awards. She lives and writes in Edmonton, where she also teaches English and creative writing at Concordia University Edmonton.

In poems that couple sinew and roots, blood and sap, skin and stone, Benning explores an ecology of affiliation between humans and the natural world in The Season’s Vagrant Light. Benning’s later work travels further afield – to Russia, New Mexico, Scotland – but always the physical landscape is entwined with memory, the landscapes of the mind.

Sheri Benning grew up on a farm in Saskatchewan, Canada. Her most recent collection of poetry, The Season’s Vagrant Light: New and Selected Poems, was published by Carcanet Press in 2015. Her previous collections include Thin Moon Psalm (Brick Books) and Earth After Rain (Thistledown Press).
