“Ideal Future Selves as Wellsprings of Motivation”
Elfrieda Lepp-Kaethler, PhD
, Assistant Professor of TESOL

Part of the Providence University College Public Lecture Series 2017, a community service for the general public. Admission is free – no registration is required.

Motivation accounts for why we do something, how hard we work at it, and how long we persist. Educators are intuitively aware of the fundamental role motivation plays in teaching and learning. Research has indeed shown it to be one of the pivotal elements in learner and teacher characteristics. The study of motivation in positive psychology examines the factors and conditions that contribute to exceptionally motivated and successful learners. Research with language learners examines several core ingredients in the learning trajectories of high achievers. Imagined ideal future selves enable students to tap into powerful sources of motivation, leading to unusual persistence and longevity in the pursuit of educational goals.

Elfrieda Lepp-Kaethler (PhD, University of Nottingham, UK) has worked as a language teacher and teacher educator in many countries. On faculty at Providence since 2000, she has taught in the graduate division of Providence’s TESOL and TTESOL programs since 2006.
