Squeak!, written by Jefferson Smith and illustrated by Cody Cheung

In a land where every parent is a king or queen and every house a castle, Princess Brinnameade has a problem. All the other princes and princesses are too busy being special in their own castles to come and play in hers. What’s a lonely royal to do? Parents and children alike will delight in this tale of yearning and determination. With lavish art on every page adding depth and charm to the story, no one will be able to resist shouting along as Princess Brinnameade pursues her simple quest: to find someone—anyone—who shares her interests. Someone who likes to squeak.

Jefferson Smith is a Canadian fantasy and science fiction writer. Twenty years ago, while researching his first novel, he mixed up his world-jump spell and found himself in an unexpected world called Whimsy, where neighborhoods were filled with castles, rock stars worked as servants, and knights in armor delivered the mail. In the years since then, he has told his children many times about all the wonderful things he saw there, disguising his adventures as bedtime stories, because he knew they wouldn’t believe him. Especially about the rock stars. Now that some of his children are grown up, he wanted to write down those stories to share with their children, so he made a quick world-jump back to Whimsy, to check on his facts. And it’s a good thing he did, because that’s when he met Cody.

Cody Cheung is now a Chinese illustrator, but she started her career as a crypto-biologist. These two explorers of Whimsy work together in our world, telling and illustrating all the fabulous stories they heard in that strange and beautiful place.

In a far-off land, where every family lives in a real castle, and every parent is a king or queen, being the royal princess is not as glamorous as you might think. In fact, it's pretty lonely. This is the story of how Princess Brinnameade overcame all that, and found a friend where she least expected it. Author Jefferson Smith wrote this whimsical and poignant story over twenty years ago, following the birth of his oldest daughter. In the years since, he's read it to her many, many times, and then to each of her younger sisters. But it took all that time to find the right artist. And it was a wait well worth enduring. "Cody's lyrical images bring so much depth and heart to the story," Smith says. "Although we've never met, she's managed to complete--and even extend--the vision I had, all those years ago."
