The Manitoba Writers’ Guild joins with others in the literary community, along with fans and readers of great Canadian literature, in grieving the passing of acclaimed novelist and poet Robert Kroetsch. The noted writer was killed on Tuesday, June 21, 2011, in a car crash east of Leduc, Alberta, while returning home from the Artspeak poetry festival in Canmore. He was a few days short of his 84th birthday.
A generous and affirming man, Kroetsch was enormously admired by critics and beloved by all who met him. He showed a rare combination of wonder and sophistication, rejoicing in discovery, and supporting what others were doing. The outpouring of grief across the country and in the many countries where Kroetsch is known attests to how greatly his life and his work has mattered.
Join us as we celebrate the life, work and influence of this vital Canadian author and critic, teacher and mentor. This evening is hosted by Dennis Cooley and features readings and reminiscences from Neil Besner, Warren Cariou, Charlene Diehl, Kristian Enright, Bob Haverluck, Jake MacDonald, Barb Schott, Margaret Sweatman, Wayne Tefs, John Weier, and Armin Wiebe.
