New Poetry from the Legendary Dennis Lee and Shel Silverstein

Monday, Feb 09, 2015 at 1:04pm

Canadian kidslit legend Dennis Lee, author of the perennial bestsellers Alligator Pie and Garbage Delight, has a New Year’s gift for you: his first new children’s collection in more than a decade, in collaboration with bestselling illustrator Jeremy Tankard.

Melvis and Elvis is classic Dennis Lee, with more than thirty new poems. This irresistible blend of Dennis Lee’s classic narrative, word play and pure nonsense, combined with Jeremy Tankard’s whimsical and energetic illustrations, is a treat not only for the very young but for readers of all ages.

Let the magic of Shel Silverstein open your eyes and tickle your mind! With twelve additional never-before-published poems, Falling Up Special Edition is filled with even more reasons to make you love this already timeless classic.

Poor Screamin’ Millie is just one of the unforgettable characters in this wondrous book of poems and drawings by the creator of Where the Sidewalk Ends, A Light in the Attic and Every Thing On It. Here you will also meet Allison Beals and her twenty-five eels; Danny O’Dare, the dancin’ bear; the Human Balloon; and Headphone Harold. So come, wander through the Nose Garden, ride the Little Hoarse, eat in the Strange Restaurant, and let the magic of Shel Silverstein open your eyes and tickle your mind.

The Pain of Living, the Sorrow of Death

Saturday, Jan 17, 2015 at 3:38pm

When death takes those we love, we lose the joy of their presence, their laughter, and the electric connection of their support. But no matter how much we love, sometimes the pain of living is too much to bear. Our November Be First selection, All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven, deals with these difficult issues head-on.

Theodore Finch is fascinated by death, and he constantly thinks of ways he might kill himself. But each time, something good, no matter how small, stops him. Violet Markey lives for the future, counting the days until graduation, when she can escape her Indiana town and her aching grief in the wake of her sister’s recent death. When Finch and Violet meet on the ledge of the bell tower at school, it’s unclear who saves whom...

Our Be First Reading Club loved Finch’s character, how his voice alternates with that of Violet, and how Niven’s writing made it easy to connect with the characters. As reader Rooshan says, this book is “a tale that takes you from the depths of the blue hole to the peak of the bell tower.”

Gayle Foreman tackles the difficult issue of suicide in I Was Here. When her best friend Meg kills herself in a lonely motel room, Cody copes by puzzling out the why and the secrets that Meg kept from her. But who helped her to die? And could Cody have prevented it? “An engrossing and provocative look at the devastating finality of suicide (and) survivor’s guilt.” — Kirkus Reviews
