Real Life Graphics

Sunday, Jul 05, 2015 at 11:12am

The graphic novel form has evolved to tell non-fiction stories and tackle serious historical issues.

With the illustrations by Maris Wicks, Primates by Jim Ottaviani is an entertaining nonfiction graphic novel that looks at the field of primatology and at the lives of three of the most remarkable women scientists who defined it: Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, and Birute Galdikas.

On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina overwhelmed the levees around lowlying New Orleans and flooded the city. Drowned City with Don Brown’s kinetic art and as-it-happens narrative captures both the tragedy and triumph of one of the worst natural disasters in American history.

On June 28, 1914, Gavrilo Princep assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria, setting off a series of events that triggered WW I. How could a poor student from a tiny Serbian village turn the wheel of history and alter the face of a continent for generations? Terrorist by Henrik Rehr is a riveting graphic novel that fills the gaps in the historical record and imagines the events that led a boy from Oblej to become history’s most significant terrorist.

Susin Nielsen: We Are All Made of Molecules

Tuesday, Jun 09, 2015 at 4:28pm

Vancouver-based author Susin Nielsen is a big deal in the world of Canadian children literature. Her novel The Reluctant Journal of Henry K. Larsen won the 2013 Governor General’s Literary Award for Children's Text. Her previous works, Word Nerd and Dear George Clooney: Please Marry My Mom, were also met with acclaim. So when a writer of this caliber is in town, you take them out to lunch. McNally Robinson's Devon Arthur recently sat down with Susin in our Prairie Ink Restaurant in Winnipeg to discuss her work over a salad and sandwich.

Nielsen's latest novel, We Are All Made of Molecules, tells the story of two young teenagers forced into cohabitation when their respective single parents begin dating and decide to take the next step in their relationship. The teens couldn't be more different. Ashley, whose main interest is maintaining top rung of the social ladder, has a tendency toward melodrama and malapropisms. Stewart is school-smart but socially clueless. Told in alternating narrative voice, Nielsen weaves their two lives together with her signature wit and charm.

Jedi apprentices and little princesses will delight in this (heart) felt retelling of the Star Wars saga. And so will Star Wars fans of any age! In The Empire Strikes Back, Luke meets his teacher Yoda, Han Solo makes a friend, and there is a lightsaber duel with a Sith Lord in the dark.
