The Boundless Deep By Kate Brallier by Chadwick Ginther - Saturday, Feb 16, 2008 at 9:29am

Kate Brallier's sophomore effort more than lives up to the promise shown by her first novel, Seal Island. Admittedly, this was a bit of a stretch for me to read. I tend to like my stories a lot heavier on the paranormal than the romance. Still, some of my happiest discoveries have come from pushing my boundaries beyond my reading comfort zone. There are so many books that I would never have read and enjoyed without taking such a chance, and I am happy to add The Boundless Deep to that list.

Gary Gygax, Creator of Dungeons & Dragons, Dead at 69 by Chadwick Ginther - Wednesday, Mar 05, 2008 at 6:11pm

Gary Gygax, co-creator of the Dungeons and Dragons roleplaying game, and in many ways the father of the roleplaying hobby itself, passed away at his home on Tuesday March 4th.

With a 4th edition of the game he created over 30 years ago set for wide release in June, I think it is only fair to pay tribute to the first Dungeon Master.

Over at the roleplaying news site EnWorld, they have collected tributes from authors, game designers and roleplayers alike. My own will follow after the jump.

Digressions with Dashiell Hammett by Chadwick Ginther - Thursday, Feb 28, 2008 at 2:27pm

Crime legend Dashiell Hammett was recently featured in a Guardian story on literary digressions. His "Flitwick Parable" from The Maltese Falcon was held up as a nearly perfect example.

In a scant three pages, Hammett's Sam Spade tells the story of real estate agent Flitwick who leaves his office for lunch, and never returns. When Flitwick is found, he is living under an assumed name, and leading a new life, much like his old, but with a new wife, house and responsibilities. The tale has nothing to do with the plot of The Maltese Falcon, but for the remainder of the novel the reader is left with the sense that anything can happen.

Nebula Awards Shortlist Announced by Chadwick Ginther - Saturday, Feb 23, 2008 at 1:24pm

The SFWA has made public the final ballot for the 2008 Nebula Awards. Congratulations to Nalo Hopkinson, one of four Canadians on the longlist, who received the nod for her novel The New Moon's Arms.

This could be a good year for Nalo, as her debut novel Brown Girl in the Ring is also a candidate for the 2008 Canada Reads contest.
